Have you ever wanted to send a letter to someone on a disk but you weren't sure if they had the same word processor as you? Do you want to be able to put your own documentation on a disk for others to read and print out without the hassle of word processor compatibility? Well now you have it!!
The DOCter is an application for the Macintosh¬ that will allow you to create stand alone documents which feature scrollable/resizable windows, graphics, and full printing capability. Each stand alone document is an application in itself that will allow the person using it to read and print the document without the need for any other application.
To create a stand alone document, you simply run The DOCter application and select New from the File menu. You can type using standard Macintosh¬ editing procedures. You can set the font and font size for the document and you can paste graphics into the document that you have copied from the scrapbook or other source. The DOCter will also Open any text file (limited to 30k maximum) or any stand alone document for editing. See Technical details at the end of this document for limitations.
Now for the business part: If you find that you can use The DOCter software please take the time to send in the shareware fee for it. If you really look at the tremendous amount of public domain and shareware products available for the Macintosh¬ you'll see a vast wealth of interesting, fun, enlightening, and useful packages that otherwise would not be there if it were'nt for the curious and hard working hackers of us who just can't see why a computer has to be difficult to be good. Think how dull it would be without your DAs and small programs that fill some of the gaps between the $195 - a - shot applications. All I'm asking is SIXTEEN DOLLARS: $14.50 for the software and an extra $1.50 for a disk with the latest release. You can skip the $1.50 and wait for the new versions to show up on CIS and GEnie if you want, your choice.
Here's an order form. All you have to do is Print it out, fill it out, and send a check. What could be easier than that? Not sending in anything would be easier but that's what the 'others' do. Not you, right?

Technical Details for version 2.35:
Ñ If you have stand alone documents that you have created with a previous version you can upgrade them to version 2.35 documents just by opening them with The DOCter v2.35 and saving them. You can check which version of The DOCter that created a stand alone document by selecting 'About The DOCter' under the apple menu when you run the stand alone document.
Ñ The maximum size of the text that a document may have is 32700 bytes. If you attempt to open an existing file with more then 32700 bytes the program will just beep at you. If you have entered more than 32700 bytes in The DOCter and try to save it the program will alert you that the output file (whether a stand alone or just text) will be truncated to 32700 bytes.
Ñ The maximum number of pictures allowed in a document is 10.
Ñ Once a graphic is pasted into the document, it cannot be deleted or copied and all graphics are automatically centered in the current window and in the page when printed. To move a graphic down the page you must place returns above it. Similarly to move a graphic up the page you must remove returns above it.
Ñ A character is placed in the body of the text when a graphic is pasted so that the program knows where the graphics are located. That character is the non-breaking space character (hex $CA). You must not use the non breaking space in your document or the graphics will move to odd places. The non breaking space is produced by typing option-space.
Ñ You should plan which graphics you are going to use and in what order you are going to place them before you start pasting them in. It is a good practice to paste a graphic on its own line: just press return before you choose Paste when pasting graphics. You can add and delete text between graphics at any time.
Ñ If your text is being hidden by a graphic, you just need to add returns until the text is below the graphic.
Ñ You can now save a desired font with the stand alone document. If you choose Save As from the File menu you are given a choice of saving the font with the document. The option is disabled if you are saving as TEXT only. Saving the font with the file may cause the size of the file to be larger than normal. If you only need geneva 12 or 9 point, chicago 12 point, or monaco 9 point or if you know that the system which will be used to run the stand alone document has the desired font, you should just turn off this option.
Ñ If there is not a printer driver in the current system file for the current chooser setting, then printing will be disabled.
Ñ Cut, Copy, Paste, and Clear work in the text when running The DOCter. Undo is only available to desk accessories that use it.
Ñ Auto scrolling is active when you select text and drag the cursor off the top or bottom of the page in The DOCter.
Ñ You can print from the DOCter application as well as from the stand alone documents.
Ñ You can now output from the stand alone documents to a text file by choosing "Output TEXT╔" under the File Menu while in a stand alone document. The file created will contain only the text but no pictures. If you need to obtain the pictures contained in a stand alone document you will need to use a resource editor such as Apple's ResEdit application to copy the individual pictures from the PICT resources in the stand alone document.
Ñ If you choose Save As╔ from the File menu in The DOCter you have the option of saving the current document as a stand alone document or as a text only file by choosing the correct button at the bottom of the save dialog. This is a way to extract the text from an existing document for using in a word processor.
Ñ You are now asked if you want to save changes if you do any editing.
Ñ A item called Show Page has been added to The DOCter under the File Menu. When this item is selected the location of the page breaks will be displayed as horizontal lines in the text. The window will display the text just as it will be printed as directed by the current page setup. You can change the page setup while Show Page is active to see the effect that different settings have on the text wrapping and the page breaks. This new feature allows the author of the stand alone document to make sure that the page breaks occur in a good place for the user when he prints the document. You should make sure that a page break does not fall on a graphic. To turn off Show Page just select it from the File menu again.
